Vega World Heritage Centre
The Vega World Heritage Centre is the gateway to Vegaøyan – a living World Heritage site at the outermost part of the Helgeland coast.
Learn how more than 1,500 years of fishing and farming, cultural landscape management, and eider husbandry led to the area's designation as a World Heritage Site.
About the World Heritage
Vegaøyan was inscribed on Unesco's list of World Natural and Cultural Heritage in 2004. The archipelago, located furthest out towards the open sea, became Norway's first and still only cultural landscape to achieve such status. The unique cultural landscape in the area is a result of the interaction between humans and nature over a long period. Particular emphasis is placed on the unique eider duck and down harvesting, and the status is thus also a tribute to women's contribution to the down process.

A living World Heritage
