About Vegaøyan World Heritage

Vegaøyan was inscribed on Unesco's World Heritage List in 2004. The archipelago, located on the outermost edge of the open sea, became Norway's first and still only cultural landscape to achieve such status. The unique cultural landscape in the area is a result of the long-standing interaction between humans and nature. Particular emphasis has been placed on the unique eider duck and down harvesting tradition, and the status is thus also a tribute to women's contribution to the down process.

About Vegaøyan World Heritage and Unesco

Vegaøyan was inscribed on Unesco’s World Heritage List for natural and cultural heritage in 2004.

The Fisherman-Farmer and the Cultural Landscape

When the low-lying islands around the main island of Vega were first settled about 1500 years ago, they were initially used as outposts for fishing, hunting, and gathering.

Eider Duck Tending

The eider duck tradition is an important part of the Vega Archipelago's World Heritage status. For generations, people have lived in close harmony with nature, caring for the eider ducks throughout the nesting season. The work with the birds, the eider houses, and the valuable down demonstrates a unique interplay between humans, birds, and the coastal landscape – and is also a tribute to the crucial role of women in the island community.
