Experience the World Heritage

There are many opportunities to experience and learn more about the World Heritage Area in connection with a visit here at the Vega World Heritage Centre. On Vega itself, there are many great hikes, and many trails feature information boards along the route, such as the path to Guristrømmen where you can learn more about the geology and cultural landscape of the area. You can visit the eider duck island of Lånan out in the World Heritage Area during summer, take the local ferry to Skogsholmen, or kayak among the islands and skerries. On Vega and in the Vega Archipelago, there are many shallow sandy beaches where you can both swim and walk, and at Eidem, there are even two snorkeling spots. Welcome to an active and educational holiday here in the Vega Archipelago.

Experience Lånan in summer 2026

The unique bird tender and eiderdown tradition is one of the main reasons why the Vega Archipelago received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. In June and July, you can visit Lånan, a outer island community where this tradition is kept alive, and experience for yourself the very special interaction between people and eider ducks.

Exploring the protected areas

Several areas within the Vega Archipelago World Heritage site are protected to preserve vulnerable birdlife, important nesting areas, cultural landscapes, and flora. As a visitor, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules for the area you are in, and to show particular consideration during nesting season.

Kayaking

Vegaøyan can easily be experienced by kayak, with shallow waters, islands, islets, and abundant birdlife up close. When you are on the water, it is important to show consideration – especially during nesting and molting season, when seabirds are particularly vulnerable.
